The holiday season is a time for joy and togetherness, but it’s also important to stay mindful of health and safety—especially for older adults and those managing chronic conditions. Here are some pharmacy-approved Thanksgiving tips to keep the celebration safe and enjoyable for everyone!
DO
Take Medications on Time: It’s easy to forget medications with a busy schedule. Set a reminder or use a pill organizer to stay on track.
Practice Portion Control: Enjoy all the delicious dishes, but try smaller portions, especially if you have dietary restrictions like managing diabetes or hypertension.
Check Food and Medication Interactions: If you’re taking certain medications, be cautious about foods like grapefruit or cranberry sauce that might interfere. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist!
Stay Hydrated: With rich foods and celebratory drinks, it’s easy to forget water. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and confusion, especially in older adults.
Wash Hands Frequently: With flu season in full swing, practice good hygiene to protect yourself and others from germs.
DON’T
Skip Meals Before Dinner: Skipping meals may lead to overeating and affect blood sugar levels. Eat small, balanced meals throughout the day.
Overindulge in Alcohol: Alcohol can interfere with medications and may lead to dehydration or dizziness. If you drink, do so in moderation.
Ignore Allergies or Dietary Needs: Communicate food restrictions to hosts or guests in advance to avoid any surprises at the table.
Delay Refilling Prescriptions: Pharmacies may have reduced hours over the holiday weekend. Refill medications early to avoid running out.
Overlook Safety for Older Adults: Ensure the home is fall-proof by removing tripping hazards, and provide seating options that are easy to access.
This Thanksgiving, let’s prioritize health and happiness. If you have questions about managing medications or health concerns during the holidays, reach out to your pharmacy team. We’re here to help!
Wishing you a safe, happy, and healthy Thanksgiving!
